The discussion if it is worth opening Bruno Schulz International Center in Drohobych goes on.

/ “Media Prostir” /

Is it worth to open International Center in the memory of artist and writer Bruno Schulz on the villa, where the fragments of his wall paintings were found? – this discussion still goes on in Drohobych. At the beginning of October within the framework of the project “Bruno Schulz and Multicultural Tradition of Galicia” a seminar considering this problem is planned to be conducted by Educational Resource Center (Lviv). The Director of this project Yaryna Borenko is convinced that such seminar will be interesting for many students and active young people.

Some new information on Bruno Schulz, which can answer the question whether it is worth to open Bruno Schulz International Center, was given by Jewish Society press secretary Leonid Goldberg. He said that Bruno Schulz probably was buried on the forsaken, half-ruined Jewish cemetery in Drohobych. The sign in Polish on the cemetery memorial plaque says: “265 inhabitants of Drohobych were murdered by Nazis on the 19th of November 1942 only for the fact of being born Jews”. It was the 19th of November 1942 when Bruno Schulz was killed with two shots in the back by SS Oberscharfführer Karl Günter.

Leonid Goldberg showed to our reporter the house next to which Bruno Schulz was shot. In this building is now cafeteria “U Frosi” (At Frosia’s Place). According to Jewish Society press secretary, cafeteria’s owner is famous philosopher, member of Journalist Association of Ukraine and admirer of Schulz writings Zenon Filipov. He made special Schulz corner in his cafeteria and its visitors can get acquainted with writer’s biography and works there. Leonid Goldberg said that Bruno Schulz memorial tablet would be soon opened next to this building.

On the house where Schulz wall paintings were found there is the tablet, which says in three languages: “In this house in 1910-1941 lived and worked prominent Jewish writer and artist, master of Polish word Bruno Schulz. 1892-1942.”
